*NOTE: Owing to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases and the return of the mask mandate, the Madcap Motel will be selling tickets until August 15 th to Elsewhere. The Madcap Motel in Downtown LA is full of visual oddities and whimsical wonders. Without giving away too much, it’s safe to say that you’ll have fun exploring the motel’s 18 different rooms, each of which offers playful and sometimes downright quirky worlds for visitors to interact with. It’s a quirky idea, and the experience aims to delight and mesmerize visitors. Now, the story goes, J.P.’s grandkids have reopened the motel for business, having discovered a magical dimension called Elsewhere behind the walls of Room #433. According to its fanciful website, the Madcap Motel had been a thriving downtown LA roadside destination until its proprietor, “J.P.”, vanished without a trace in 1966. Unlike more straightforward art exhibitions, some immersive experiences revolve around stories, supported by sets and sometimes even actors.

Equipped with a flashlight, you and your date will be able to search through Josie’s things in order to piece together what happened to her. (Don’t worry, you won’t actually be acting - think of it more like being like a character in a video game or movie.) The story at the heart of The Nest is about a woman named Josie, who has recently died and left behind a storage room full of journals, cassettes, and other intimate belongings. Like the Madcap Motel, The Nest invites you to take part in a story. Designed to be experienced by two audience members at a time (hello, date!), The Nest, as the website explains, combines elements of immersive theater, narrative video games, serialized podcasts, and escape rooms. Unlike the other exhibits, The Nest is more like an interactive detective novel. If you’re more into mysteries and history (and looking through the personal effects of strangers), then you’ll find the imaginary world of The Nest particularly intriguing. The exhibition runs through September, so get tickets while you can. You’ll find yourself waving your arms around and generally being silly, so it’s a nice way to loosen up those inhibitions and laugh with a special someone. Illusion is themed around elements - among other things, visitors can “splash” around in projected water, project fire beings, and dance around with projected stick figures made of light. The exhibit aims to give visitors “the chance to step into an illusion of infinite space” - this might seem a little heady, but the experience is actually quite fun and engaging.
